Our neighborhood is a great, interactive place to live because of our neighbors.
Each month, one NEPNA household will be highlighted so you’ll recognize another NEPNA
neighbor while fishing at one of our waterfront parks, riding bikes along our livable streets to a
game at Northeast Little League, or visiting one of our neighborhood businesses. Any household
can be highlighted – just let us know if you’d like to be next and we’ll take care of the rest. |

The Jurgensen Family
It’s always interesting to consider how the paths of individuals in a world of over 6.7 billion people intersect. This is especially apparent when considering neighbors because it leads to the sense that we came together based on our preferences for the same set of variables. The paths that have lead our neighbors to Northeast Park are usually nuanced but often similar; some lived here as a child and moved back, some returned home after travels abroad, others were attracted to the various family-friendly features of the neighborhood and liked the idea of living within a few miles of downtown.
And then there’s the story of the Jurgensens’ path to Northeast Park, which is anything but familiar.
Think of some of the most remote places on earth and it’s likely that Siberia, Russia at least makes the top ten (if not because it may be remote, then because it at least sounds remote). Ken and Lynn Jurgensen were traveling in Russia and happened to meet fellow Americans in the Siberian city of Tomsk. There was likely the typical talk of hometowns, occupations, and so forth. When the fellow travelers mentioned being from St. Petersburg (Florida – not Russia), it struck the Jurgensens. Lynn had fond memories of visiting family in our city as a young child and both Ken and Lynn were very much over the frigid Connecticut winters.
Problem... Solution.
In 2008, the Jurgensens sold their Avon, Connecticut home, relocated their thriving catering business, and brought their young daughter and two cats to their home in Northeast Park. Ken is the distinguished chef for their catering company – Chives – and Lynn is the accountant / marketing / website developer / doer of all things member of the business (check out their website).

They visited several neighborhoods in St. Petersburg and chose their home on Maple Street because of the close proximity to Crisp Park and the presence of so many children playing in the parks and riding bikes along the streets. They have quickly adapted to the absence of the long, oppressive northeast winters and have even established a preference for Pass-a-Grille beach (a beach preference is often considered a major step in transitioning to becoming a local).
Ken and Lynn have already worked to make our neighborhood a better place through being active at our NEPNA Monthly Meetings and utilizing their catering knowledge to help coordinate the free food for our inaugural Dog Days of Summer party at Crisp Park. And while the story of how the Jurgensens came to Northeast Park is not common, we’re certainly fortunate that they chose our neighborhood to call home. |
